1. Use a Ruler & Pencil. Draw lightly. Draw a line from each corner of your paper.
2. Use a compass to draw a large circle.
3. Use a Ruler to divide each section into 3 slices. You should have a TOTAL of 12 slices. The slices don’t have to be perfectly even.
4. Design one of the sections. Keep it simple but creative. REPEAT it all around your circle. Add a design element to help you know where the primary and secondary colors are.
5. Paint in the Primary Colors, Red - Yellow - Blue
Leave 3 spaces in between each color.
6. Mix the paint to create the the Secondary Colors.
The secondary colors are in the middle of the primaries.
7. Mix and paint in the TERTIARY colors. The tertiary colors are in the spaces in between the primary and secondary colors.
Students will be graded on a rubric. They will be assessed based on their creative approach to the design of their color wheel as well as the placement and mixing of the correct colors.
I use this project as an introduction to Acrylic painting. The students become comfortable with the medium, how to use and clean it up and work with it.
The next project is a larger painting. Usually a landscape.
