Students will learn about depth, by creating a foreground, middle and back ground to a landscape drawing. They will then learn about color mixing and use painted papers to create a house in the landscape drawing

THE PLAN
3 sessions; 50 minutes per session

1. SWBAT: define space and depth
2. SWBAT: define collage
3. SWBAT: Recognize David Hockneys work

1. 2-3 sheets of 12x 18 white paper per student
2. Tempera paint
3. Oil pastels
4. Glue
5. Scissors
6. Pencil

1. Talk about landscape pictures, what is in them and about foreground, middle and background. Explain how things get smaller as they go back in space. Show examples from artists like David Hockney. Talk about how the roads bend and move with the curve of the earth.
2. Draw together some examples of landscapes.
3. Pick one of the practice drawings to draw on the larger white paper.
4. Color it in with florescent oil pastels.

Session 2
1. Teach how tho mix the secondary colors from the 3 primary. Have students make painted papers using colors that will create contrast with the backgounds they drew.
2. Add texture to the painted papers by drawing with the back of the paintbrush, or use a comb or pieces of cardboard.

Session 3.
1. Have students cut out a rectangle and a triangle from some of the painted papers to create a house to go into their drawing. They can add window and other details too!

Have students point to the middle ground of their picture.
Ask them how they created depth or space.
