THE PLAN
Students will create a oil pastel landscape drawing that showcases a fauvist color scheme; the drawing will exhibit a variety of drawing techniques commonly used with oil pastels.
Toned drawing paper
Oil pastels
Blending sticks
Pencil
Ruler
-Students will complete an oil pastel technique practice worksheet.
-Student will select a reference image from the options provided.
-Using a pencil, students will lightly draw out their reference image including the necessary details for their background, middleground and foreground areas.
-With their outline drawn, students will begin applying unnatural color to their landscape drawing with oil pastels. [See Fauvism]
-Oil pastels are meant to be layered and blended together similar to colored pencils or chalk pastels.
-When blending oil pastels, it is important to do so slowly to be sure colors don’t become muddy.
Students should apply oil pastel through hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, and controlled scribbles - techniques all practiced prior to beginning their drawing.
-Students will not be allowed to use black pastel to complete this drawing.
To create dark shades students need to use complementary colors. For example, red and green, yellow and purple, orange and blue, etc.
-When students are applying color to their drawing, It is strongly encouraged that students start applying color to their landscapes background first, next moving to the middleground and then finishing in the foreground.
