THE PLAN
3 sessions; 45 minutes per session
1. SWBAT identify and create balanced compositions.
2. SWBAT identify and create variety in objects
3. SWBAT create identifiable shapes using outline.
day 1-2
1. tissue paper- warm colors, pre-cut into roughly 4x6" pieces (I had a selection so students could choose)
2. watered down glue
3. old paintbrushes
4. heavy white paper (I used 80lb)
day 2-3
5. sketch paper/pencil
6. scissors
7. glue
8. white crayons
9. black construction paper
10. Sharpies
day 1
Teacher:
1. Show examples of sunset photography. Describe how photographer used balance & variety in the images.
Students:
1. Choose 3 colors tissue paper (5 min)
2. Tear tissue into pieces. "Paint" the watered-down glue on the white paper and lay tissue on glue. (30 min)
*Finish on day 2
day 2
3. Fold sketch paper into 1/4s. Brainstorm ideas in 1 square. Make sketches of 3 best ideas in other 3 squares. Remember balance & variety. Can't use details on objects, so how do you use just the outline to show what the object is? (10 min)
4. On black paper, use white crayon to draw objects from best sketch.
5. Cut out and glue to tissue-covered paper.
4. Use black Sharpie markers to add any fine details.
Select some student work to hang on board. Have short critique where students describe variety and balance in their work.
This sounds really complicated, but it's not that bad. All my students "got" the balance & variety, and the colors all looked amazing on the final pieces!

I've done these but with watercolors. The blended colors are awesome.
