Day 1
•As a class discuss why an artist would use hidden symbols in their artwork. Possible discussion topics include: getting the viewer to look closer at the art, getting the viewer to think about the art in a different way, to tell a story etc.
•After students discuss why artists include hidden symbols in their artwork they will make a work of art about them that is filled with hidden symbols.
•Give students “Discovering You” worksheet. Students will have the opportunity to sketch symbols on the worksheet that can be included in their final work of art. The worksheet includes prompts to get the student thinking about themselves on a deeper level. Students may add ideas and symbols that are not included in the worksheet.

Day 2
•The teacher will start of class discussing the elements of art and how they work together to create a unified piece of art. The teacher may choose to show the students several works of art and have the students point out the areas where they see lines, pattern, movement, unity and emphasis. Artworks can be chosen based on student level and interest.
•Students will be given the discovering lines worksheet and have the opportunity to draw several different line patterns focusing on the elements of design they learned about.
•After students feel comfortable using the elements of design in their work they may begin a sketch for the final project.
•Students will pick a geometric shape such as a circle, square, rectangle, oval, star, pentagon etc. as the main shape to draw inside. Once students have chosen a shape they may fill the inside with different line patterns and their symbols. Students must include at least five hidden symbols with their shapes and line patterns.

Day 4 and Day 5

•Students will begin final artwork on 10 x 10 white drawing paper. Students will sketch out designs in pencil first. After all designs have been drawn students may begin to use sharpie markers to fill in design using the elements of design.
•Students will have Day 4 and Day 5 to complete most of the artwork, as this is used as in class studio time.

Day 6

•Students will have 15 minutes of class time to finish their artwork.
•After all artworks have been completed students will hang their work on the board for a class critique. Students will look at the art and see if they can discover the symbols their classmates have hidden in their works of art.

•Teacher will observe the students throughout the lesson for understanding and participation.
•Student assessment of the artwork based on critique discussion
•Rubric based on objectives of the lesson
