Kindergarten students learned about Wassily Kandinsky and his Farbstudie Quadrate painting. The students identify the geometric shapes, draw their own concentric circles with crayon, then paint with watercolors to create a resist. I taught this to Kindergarten but it would be appropriate for any primary grade.

THE PLAN
2 sessions; 40 minutes per session
1. The students will learn about artist Wassily Kandinsky and discuss his painting "Farbstudie Quadrate".
2. The students will count the number of sections and identify the shapes seen in Farbstudie Quadrate.
3. The students will use crayon to draw concentric circles that fill the space of their paper.
4. The students will demonstrate variety in color choices.
5. The students will demonstrate proper paintbrush care when painting watercolors over their crayon drawings.
1. 6x6 inch White Paper (any size square will work)
2. Pencils/Erasers
3. Crayons
4. Watercolors and brushes
1. Introduction
-Describe, analyze, interpret, and judge Kandinsky's Farbstudie Quadrate
-identify and count geometric shapes
-Short bio of Kandinsky
2. Draw concentric circles
-use a variety of crayon colors, press hard
-fill the space of the paper
3. Paint circles
-review paintbrush care
-paint over circles with watercolors
The teacher will observe the students during class to make sure that they are on task and following directions.
Did the student draw concentric circles?
Did the student fill the space?
Did the student use a variety of colors?
This could possibly be completed in one class period if you scaled back the discussion at the beginning. I had each student complete one set of circles but displayed them all together on a bulletin board to mimic Kandinsky's painting.
