THE PLAN
3 sessions; 60 minutes per session

1. SWBAT create artworks, integrating themes found through direct observation, personal experience, and imagination
2. SWBAT examine the role and the influence of visual images in their daily lives, including mass media and popular culture
3. SWBAT recognize that, and investigate how art as a human activity emerges from human needs, values, beliefs, ideas, and experiences

1. Square pieces of cardstock or construction paper.
2. Pencil
3. Tape
4. Scissors
5. Paper (I offer 12x18 or 18x24)

Need these materials? Visit Blick!

1. Have students construct a definition for "Tessellations" using similarities and differences.
2. Introduce M.C. Escher.
- Look at example for inspiration.
3. Follow the "How to" guide with students to create your own tessellated shape.
4. Have students trace their shape in a sketchbook and develop possible images.
5. Trace shapes onto good copy paper.
6. Complete by drawing their images into the spaces.
Optional - students can use colour schemes or shading to finish their work.

Students will be assessed on creativity, level of detail, neatness, colouring/shading and their sketchbook work.

This is fairly simple lesson, but its great to use at the start of a school year to assess students' ability level. Every one's work is successful but it is evident who your stronger students are!

Watch out for butterflies! They always see butterflies.

Agree, I love tessellations and have done them with students using shapes in PowerPoint, and then repeating the pattern to great a graphic image...this is great for the art exploration of tessellations.

Of note, I had my students create a shape from used manila folders that we used to show value by overlapping the shapes creating a darker value for each layer.
Thank again for sharing this excellent lesson/ppt!
