THE PLAN
6 sessions; 85 minutes per session
1. SWBAT define the specific quality of the element chosen.
2. SWBAT find and identify three contemporary artists that use the element in the specified way.
3. SWBAT describe how an historical artist and the contemporary artists use the element to create a particular response in the viewer.
1. Poster board
2. Rulers
3. Drawing paper
4. Pencils, Paint as necessary
5. Glue (glue stick or "yes" glue)
1. Give students an entry document that invites them to create a proposal for a new poster series for Crystal Productions about the elements of art.
2. Make strips of paper with specific qualities of each element, ie: bold line, curvy line, etc. Make one strip per student in each group; one specific quality per group.
3. Plan pbl group management: group contract, job titles and descriptions, rubric, and a tracking chart for the artifacts and/or scaffolding activities.
4. To randomize the groups, have the students draw a strip of paper from a bowl or bag. Or control your group structures by assigning them.
5. One student should be assigned to research the historical artist that you determine uses the element in the specific way, write a description about his/her work, and copy an exemplary work for the poster.
6. One or two students should be assigned to find some contemporary artists that also use the element in a similar way, describe their work, and make smaller examples for the poster.
7. Give students the poster paper and the measurements for the poster design (or make a template).
8. Check students' art examples and descriptions before they affix them to the poster.
Students will be assessed using a rubric for the quality of the finished poster, and for the oral presentation.
1. google search for the historical artists (Picasso, Jim Dine, Alice Neel, etc)
2. Any art history books you have on hand.
3. Contemporary art sources such as Art News magazine, Juxtapose magazine, or (in Los Angeles) LA Weekly, your local newspaper art reviews.
4. Typeface resources to choose the style for the poster series.
The Buck Institute has good resources for designing and managing group projects.
