This lesson packs a lot into one project! Students learn about artist Grant Wood, Intermediate colors, landscapes, and the collage technique. They use cooperative learning as they practice mixing intermediate colors used in painted papers for their collage landscape. It also includes a follow-up digital art and writing project that can be done on iPads.

THE PLAN
4 sessions; 45 minutes per session
1. SWBAT share some information about artist Grant Wood.
2. SWBAT define collage.
3. SWBAT define landscape.
4. SWBAT use overlapping technique to show space and depth in a picture.
5. SWBAT mix all six intermediate (tertiary) colors.
6. (optional follow-up project) SWBAT write a set a words inspired by their artwork.
1. White paper
2. Construction paper
3.Tempera paint
4. Painting combs or other items to scrape lines into the paint
5. Brushes and paper plates
6. Glue
7. Scissors
8. Grant Wood images, video, and information
9. iPads and WordFoto app (optional follow-up project)
(Session 1)
1. Introduce Intermediate colors
- review primary and secondary colors
- discuss and demo how to mix intermediate colors
2. Discuss visual texture
- demo how to use painting comb or craft stick to draw texture into the wet paint
3. Have students pair up and work together to mix an intermediate color
- each student uses the mixed color to paint a white paper and add visual texture with a painting comb or craft stick
(Session 2)
4. Students continue mixing and painting intermediate colors until all 6 have been made.
(Session 3)
5. Introduce the artist Grant Wood
-show images of his artwork, especially his landscapes
- discuss the shapes, overlapping, space and perspective in his landscapes
6. Demo how to use the painted papers to create a landscape collage
-choose a color of construction paper to glue collage on
-emphasize the overlapping
(Session 4)
7. Students create landscape collage
(Optional Follow-up Digital Art and Words Project)
8. Students use iPads with WordFoto app
-photograph finished collage with app
-add a set of words that are inspired by the landscape
-adjust settings to create a finished product they like
-email finished work to teacher or save to camera roll
Students will be assessed by:
Observing and listening to choices and conversations during the cooperative color mixing part.
Filling out an exit slip listing one thing they learned about Grant Wood.
Reviewing the final artwork for craftsmanship, creativity, and directions followed.
