THE PLAN
4 sessions; 40 minutes per session
1. SWBAT describe the Arctic environment.
2. SWBAT create their own scratch art board.
3. SWBAT draw a balanced design that it is interesting to look at.
1. Tag board
2. Crayons
3. Scratch art paint (see below)
4. Sponge brushes
5. Scratch art tools (or tooth picks)
6. Pencils
7. Practice paper
Day 1. Introduce the Arctic to students. This can be through a book, power point, or discussion. Talk about the land forms and animals that are in the Arctic. Have students do a practice drawing.
Day 2: Show students how to make the scratch board. Choose crayon colors (I did blues and greens for the arctic scene) and color entire piece of tag board, pressing hard on the crayon. When finished, paint two coats of scratch board paint over the top. Allow the first coat to dry before painting the second.
Day 3: Using toothpick or scratch art tool, scratch Arctic design into board.
Day 4: Have students share their artwork with the class. Ask for one thing they did well and one thing they can do better. Give students the remainder of class to finish their boards.
To make the scratch art paint: Take a 1/2 bottle of tempera paint and add approximately 1 tablespoon of dish soap (like Dawn). I recently posted about scratch art projects on my blog, you can find more information there on how to make the scratch boards.
