Elementary [1st-5th] Lesson Plan

Value Skyline

Created on October 20, 2011 by imagiNATION

I used this lesson in fourth grade. It is an introduction to value as well as a conceptual project that explores dusk, sunset and skylines.

THE PLAN
3 sessions; 60 minutes per session

SWBAT define and create value
SWBAT explain a silhouette
SWBAT recognize a skyline

1. Value Worksheet
2. Pictures of skylines
3. Tempera Paint (black, white, blue, red, yellow)
Brushes
4. Palettes
5. White Drawing Paper (9x12)
6. Black construction paper

Need these materials? Visit Blick!

1. Introduce value and have students create practice value scales using primary colors.
2. Create background (dusk or sunset) using a value scale circling out from a sun or moon.
3. Discuss skylines and how the sun/moon create silhouettes at different times of the day (using cities kids recognize is really effective)
4. Have students practice and then draw a final skyline
5. Glue skyline to dry background
6. Add windows (optional)

Full lesson plans are attached. These are my full-blown TFA style LPs. I wavered from them in person and will probably simplify and tweak for this year but they will give you the general idea.

I love this! I saw this project on Pinterest with a tree instead of a cityscape and since I'm all about choices... :)
