Middle [6th-8th] Lesson Plan

The Face of Fame

Created on May 03, 2013 by jbucher

Students are introduced to the POP art portraits made famous by Andy Warhol. Students brought in a magazine photo of famous person. We used transfer medium and then adhered the transfer to a clay tile. Students used acrylic paints to enhance the image and color it with "Warhol like" colors.

1. Select front facing portrait of someone famous. Picture may be someone from history, music, film, television, politics, religion.
2. Cut image out. Image may be no smaller than 4" and no larger than 6".
3. Apply the Omni-gel directly on top of the image. Apply one layer at a time. Let each layer dry completely before applying the next. Apply layers in alternating directions. When dry, place the image in a tub of water for 5- 10 minutes. Remove. Place the image on a clean hard surface. Gently rub in a circular motion to remove the magazine photo. A flexible transfer of the image remains. One side of the image will be glossy, one matte. Use the Omni-gel to adhere the image to the clay tile. Use the acrylic paint to enhance the image in a POP art style.

This project will be assessed with a rubric that covers project objectives.

I showed the students a teacher made power point with a variety of Warhol's POP art portraits.

This project can be linked to other subjects and themes. Some students used photos of historical figures while others chose contemporary entertainment figures.
