This lesson is a brief introduction to Banksy and his stenciled pranks. Students will make their own stencil that is their own social commentary.

THE PLAN
3 sessions; 35 minutes per session
1. SWBAT learn about British contemporary Pop Artist, Banksy.
2. SWBAT define art as social commentary
3. SWBAT design their own stenciled art using designed shapes
4. SWBAT print their art work on sidewalk/walls at school
1. Sketch paper and pencil
2. Tagboard, cardboard or card stock
3. Scissors or exacto knife
4. Paint brush/ sponge
5. Tempera paint
1. Students will watch a presentation about Banksy's art
2. Students will discuss social commentaries in street art
3. Students will create 5 sketches for their own social art and choose the best one
4. Students will transfer their design to tagboard and cut it out.
5. Students will use brushes/sponges to print their design using tempera paint on sidewalk. (Tempera will wash off.)
Students will self-assess their social commentary art by:
1. Taking photos, videos of their art or making a powerpoint
2. Present a guided tour to class of their street/sidewalk art
3. Allow for other creative ideas they may entertain
Brainstorm for ideas.

1. Does the school have a mascot?
Stencil its footprints around the school as a class project (washable)
2. Stencil "Hamburger and Fries" (Pop Image) outside the cafeteria
3. Stencil a couple of favorite books' Dewey Decimals outside the library for children to look up insdie.
