Tar Paper Pastel Owls

3rd graders will use oil or chalk pastels to create owls (our school mascot) on black tar paper.

THE PLAN
2 sessions; 50 minutes per session

1. SWBAT define shape
2. SWBAT define form
3. SWBAT use chalk or oil pastels effectively

1. Tar Paper
2. Light colored pencil (for drawing)
3. Chalk pastels
4. Oil pastels
5. Fixative (for chalk)

Day One:
1. Using a light colored pencil, draw an owl that takes up most of the space on the paper
2. Choose chalk or oil pastel to complete your project

Day Two:
3. Finish Owl Picture

    Just did this with my 3rd graders and they loved it.
    They had just read "Owl Moon" in their classroom.
    We also used photos of real owl images and I let them choose natural or fantasy colors. We used dark color construction paper and also added the moon and stars.
