THE PLAN
4 sessions; 50 minutes per session
1. SWBAT identify elements of art and principles of design.
2. SWBAT make highlights and shadows to make their art more effective.
3. SWBAT blend a variety of colors to make a piece stand out and not be flat.
1. Paper
2. Box of oil pastels for each student
3. Elmo (optional)
4. Projector (Optional)
1. Discuss with the students the elements of art and principles of design. You can show pictures, use a power point, or charts on the board.
2. Explain how they are going to do a step-by-step cornucopia drawing focusing on these concepts.
3. Using projector and elmo, help students lay out basic shapes of the cornucopia, focusing on overlapping shapes and drawing them big to fill the space.
4. Have students follow along blending colors into each part of the picture. Explain using multiple colors blending gives a richer effect than using for example only red on an apple, or only yellow on corn. Finish off each part with a little highlight and shadow.
5. Constantly check for understanding and monitor their steps to make sure they are getting it. I always encourage saying they don't all have to look the same, that's why they are so special!
Students will be graded on their behavior and work ethic. (Did they work the whole time, staying on task, participating, and being respectful?) Students will also be graded on their ability to identify elements of art and principles of design.
Students really like this project because everything is working and participating on the same piece, and even the students who struggle with art tend to have a beautiful piece.
