Shattered Values

Students learn about values and how to create a smooth value change using graphite.

THE PLAN
3 sessions; 45 minutes per session

1. SWBAT define and use line.
2. SWBAT define and use value.
3. SWBAT demonstrate exceptional skill in using blending tools and graphite pencils in an artwork.

1. Pencil
2. Eraser
3. 12 x 18 drawing paper
4. Animal or plant resource image
5. Blending stump

1. Students choose an animal or plant.
2. Students will lightly draw their plant or animal in the center of the paper.
3. Using their pencil, students draw wavy lines radiating from the center of the animal. (They will draw the lines right over their animal or plant drawing.
4. Using their graphite pencil, students begin shading in each space.
5. Students will start with dark values at one end of the shape, gradually getting lighter as they shade towards the other end of the shape.
6. Students repeat that same procedure for each shape.

Student will be assessed by a visual assessment of smooth gradations, correct contour lines, and craftsmanship.
