Arcimboldo Self-Portraits

High school students will create symbolic self-portraits in the style of the artist Arcimboldo.

THE PLAN
6 sessions; 60 minutes per session

1. Student will be able to represent his or herself using symbolism.
2. Student will be able to use a variety of different art materials.

1. drawing paper
2. photos of students
3. black and white printer
4. mixed media supplies (colored pencils, paint, collage materials, etc)

1. Introduce students to symbolism by presenting and discussing various art works that utilize extensive symbolism.
2. Take photos of students.
3. Print photos
4. Have students brainstorm important things about themselves
5. Have students sketch thumbnail ideas of how to visually represent the ideas they brainstormed.
6. Have students draw directly on the printed photo, filling areas with brainstormed ideas. The goal is to fill the entire picture in a unified manner.
7. Students should then grid their rough draft and transfer it to larger drawing paper.
8. Various mixed media supplies should be used to complete the assignment.

Students will be assessed based on the attached rubric.
